5 Reasons Why You MUST Read Little Women and Good Wives by Louisa May Alcott

Little Women and Good Wives by Louisa May Alcott are two of my all time favorite classic literature novels besides Pride and Prejudice, Sense And Sensibility by Jane Austen, Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, and The Phantom Of The Opera by Gaston Leroux.

Little Women tells the story of four sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March during the American Civil War era. All four sisters have different personalities and characteristics. This makes the story interesting and beautiful. Meg – the eldest and most beautiful March sister. She is very feminine and lady-like. As a young girl, Meg always dreams about a good marriage and being a good wife. While the second sister, Jo is very optimistic and a tomboy. Jo hates to be lady-like and dreams to be a writer. The third sister, Beth is the gentlest and timid one. Beth is also very shy, loves to play piano and stay at home. The youngest sister – Amy is very artistic and conscious of her own importance. Like Jo, Amy is also optimistic and dreams to be an artist. The girls’ father Mr. March was serving the Union Army and was far from home. He does not appear until the end of the book. The girls stay at home with their mother –Mrs. March. Mrs. March shares all the joys and sorrows of each of her daughters. Her daughters called her ‘Marmee’.

Good Wives is the second part of Little Women. The story takes place in mid-nineteenth-century Massachusetts where the four March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy continue to encounter both joys and sorrows along life’s path, as they journey into womanhood, both close to home and further away.

To me, Little Women and Good Wives are two awesome literature novels that you MUST not miss. If you haven’t read these two novels by Louisa May Alcott, I highly recommend you to go to the nearest bookstore to purchase these two novels and read them. In this listicle post, I would like to share with you five reasons why you must read Little Women and Good Wives. And the five reasons are:-

1) The March Sisters Interesting Personalities

All four antagonists in the novel were given their own interesting personalities by the author. After reading Little Women and Good Wives, most women will ask “Which March sister am I likely most? Meg? Jo? Beth? Or Amy? For me, I am more like Amy. I am artistic, creative, brave, optimistic, and will go for what I want. Like Amy, I am also not the kind of girl who will allow anyone to tell me what to do or what I should do with my life. I am the pilot of my own life. So if you want to know which March sisters you are, you definitely MUST read these two novels.

    2) Inspire You To Go For Your Dreams

The March sisters never allow others to make life decisions for them although they aren’t perfect girls and prone to making mistakes. Just like all of us. All four March sisters have their own dreams and goals, and the four of them work hard to achieve what they want.  Meg always dream to be a good wife, Jo dreams to be a writer, Amy wants to be an artist. Even the gentle Beth also has strength in her. Although Beth doesn’t have dreams or life goals like her sisters, she still doesn’t allow others to make decisions for her to be happy. Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy have a passion to drive and to make their own happiness. Besides inspiring us to go for our dreams, the March sisters are also good-intentioned models for feminism.

3) Make You Appreciate All Types of Love

Reading Little Women and Good Wives makes you realized that love isn’t just one type. Love is not just between boyfriend and girlfriend. Alcott teaches us the unbreakable bond of sisterly love, mother-daughter love, family love, romantic relationship, and even friendship love. Alcott also teaches us that there is no perfect way to love someone, and there are so many ways to express love feelings to the person you love.

4) The Beauty of Classic Literature Writing

No.4 is the main reason why you MUST read Little Women and Good Wives. It is for you to know and explore the beauty of classic literary writing. Literature novels and modern times novels are different especially when it comes to the style of writing. As a bookworm, I read both classic literature and modern times novels. Reading literature and modern times novels always gives me different feelings.

5)  It’s Evergreen

Although Little Women and Good Wives are already more than 100 years old (150 years old if I am not mistaken), these two classics are still listed as one of the most read novels. In fact, it is named the “mother of girls novel”. If you are a bookworm and a literature lover, you must at least read these two novels once in a lifetime. Plus, these novels are evergreen. Once you read these novels, you’ll know the story and will be able to chat about it with other bookworms or literature lovers.

Overall, I rate Little Women and Good Wives 10/10. Little Women and Good Wives will always be my favorite classic literature of all time.
