NOVEL REVIEW: Last Tang Standing By Lauren Ho

Eiyo Fadneiras,

How are you guys doing? I hope you guys are doing good. Happy first day of full-lockdown to all my Malaysian friends. Yes, we are back to our lockdown days again. What to do.... the Covid-19 situation here is really bad now. However, I hope you guys will stay positive. It's because this is for our own good. And trust me, it's not going to be forever.

Reading books/novels is one of the best things to do during your stay-at-home vacation (I prefer to give lockdown a positive name ^_^). So for today's post, I'm going to share with you guys a review of a novel I just finished reading last two weeks. The novel is titled Last Tang Standing. The novel is written by Lauren Ho. So let's not waste time and get on with the review. We shall begin with Lauren Ho's bio.

ABOUT LAST TANG STANDING

Last Tang Standing (LTS) is a romantic comedy, chic-lit, and self-discovery novel. LTS tells the story of Andrea Tang. Andrea is a Chinese-Malaysian lawyer who lives in Singapore, 33 years old, and has a very chic lifestyle. She has a successful career as a lawyer, lives in a posh apartment, wears designer stuff head-to-toe, and has a group of cool friends who hangs out with her at swanky clubs.

The only thing that is missing in Andrea's life is love. Andrea is still single and hasn't found her Mr. Right yet. Every time Andrea went to family gatherings, her relatives and even her mother will always ask her the 'gold question' -WHEN ARE YOU GETTING MARRIED? This question makes Andress depress and desperate to look for love. But searching for Mr. Right is not an easy thing for Andrea even tho she is an attractive woman inside out (Umm.....in fact, searching for the right person is never an easy thing for all of us no matter how intelligent and attractive we are :P).

Throughout her Mr. Right quest, Andrea meets a lot of guys- a young charming scammer, a doctor who only has time for his job, a romantic and charming billionaire named Eric Deng, and a down-to-earth lawyer who loves drawing comics named Suresh Aditparan. Suresh is Andrea's colleague and roommate at work.

As the story goes on, Andrea and Suresh become close friends. Andrea and Suresh love talking to each other about life. They share their struggles and problems with each other. It turns out that Andrea and Suresh have a lot of things in common. They soon develop romantic feelings towards each other. Andrea really likes Suresh. But at the same time, she is afraid of her family's opinion of Suresh. Suresh is an Indian and plus, he's not a crazy rich Asian. Suresh is definitely not the guy Andrea's family will approve compare to Eric Deng.

As days go by, Andrea gets torn and confused. Which path should she pursue? Should Andrea go for what she wants? Or should she follow her family's wishes?

MY REVIEW OF THE LAST TANG STANDING

Voila!!!!!!!!!! My illustration of Andrea Tang. I tried to make her look like Park Min Young ^_^ (Image: My Artstagram @fmooneira_art)

First of all, I have to say that this novel is chic, hilarious, joyful, and fun to read. This novel is definitely good for light reading. Plus, I love self-discovery novels. Reading self-discovery novels help me to reflect on myself.

I like the way Ho uses POV 1 for her writing in LTS. It puts us, readers, closer to the protagonist, Andrea Tang. The author also uses diary-style writing for this novel. It makes this novel very enjoyable to read. I think Ho's writing style is very chic, sassy, and trendy. It makes us happy reading her work.

From reading LTS, I learned a lot about the Chinese-Malaysia culture. Before reading LTS, I only have 30% of knowledge about the Chinese-Malaysian culture. I always want to learn more about the Chinese-Malaysian culture because it is part of my heritage. To be honest, I'm actually half Chinese and half Malay. My late grandmother (my father's mother) is actually Chinese adopted by a Malay family.

Besides the Chinese-Malaysian culture, I also learned that it is important to set your priority straight and be firm with it. Others can suggest to you what to do and comment about you. But they don't walk in your shoes. So they don't really know how you feel, what you have been through, and what you want. So in the end it is always your decision that counts. After all, your life is your own responsibility.

Reading LTS also tells me that having a chic lifestyle and a successful career with a handsome salary doesn't always make you happy. Especially if your job is not your passion and dreams. This also tells me that money and luxuries can't buy us happiness all the time.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading LTS. I'm giving this novel 8/10. I also highly recommend this novel to bookworms who are looking for something chic and light to read. This novel is also good for those who like stories with Asian vibes. If you like the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy by Kevin Kwan, you are also going to like the Last Tang Standing.

Last but not least, I hope LTS will be adapted into an Asian movie/drama one day. I hope to see South Korean romantic comedy queen, Park Min Young as Andrea Tang. I believe the role will suit Park Min Young. Plus, her English is very fluent. I also hope to see British-Indian actor, Dev Patel as Suresh Aditparan. Dev Patel is a talented and charismatic actor. I believe the role will suit him, and he will have good chemistry with Park Min Young. Hehehe.

Ok lah, that's all for now. Thank you for reading this review. Hope to see you guys again soon.

XoXo,

Fadima Mooneira ^_^

  13. I read this book last year and enjoyed it! I think if I had read it before the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, I would've liked it even more, but it was *so* similar that I had a tough time separating them haha! However, it was definitely fun and upbeat and would be a great movie. I like your casting choices :)
