LET'S GEEK ABOUT THE GUY UPSTAIRS WEBTOON

Webtoons are now an in-thing in Asia. Webtoons are a type of digital comic that is meant to be read on computers, smartphones, and tablets, and they began in South Korea. Readers can read and get access to webtoons by downloading apps like Naver Webtoon, Tapas.io, WebComics, MangaToon, Bilibili Comics, etc on their gadgets. These apps can be downloaded from Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Like books, webtoons also have genres such as romance, fantasy, thriller, horror, historical fiction, etc.

Webtoons begin with manhwa. Manhwa is the traditional term for South Korean comics and print cartoons. Webtoons became a phenomenon when manhwa became famous worldwide.

Reading webtoons is now one of my hobbies. This hobby gives me knowledge and ideas on story writing, content creation, and character drawing. It also helps me to enhance my creativity, makes me more imaginative, aware of the current trend in story writing, and knows readers' tastes.

Most webtoons I've read have beautiful illustrations, interesting plots and storylines, and also sexy AF alpha male heroes in them ^_^  But for today's post, I'm not going to geek about a webtoon with a sexy AF alpha male hero in it. The webtoon I'm going to geek about today has a sexy AF psychopath in it instead. Dun-dun-dun-dun!!!

Now let me share a summary of The Guy Upstairs webtoon. After the summary, I will share the four reasons why I enjoyed reading this webtoon.

ABOUT THE GUY UPSTAIRS

CREATOR: HANZA ART

GENRE: THRILLER & MYSTERY

WHERE TO READ IT: NAVER WEBTOON

THE BLURB:

The Guy Upstairs (TGU) belongs to the thriller and mystery genre. The writer and artist of this webtoon is Hanza. Hanza is a Malaysian webtoon artist. The main setting for this webtoon is in Malaysia. And all characters in TGU are Malaysians.

In the first episode of TGU, Rozy (the female lead) heard strange noises from the apartment above her's. The unit above Rozy's was where Adam Bahri lived. Rozy knew that Adam was a charming guy with loads of admirers. But at the same time, Rozy also knew that Adam was mysterious.

One day, Rozy was mentally tired due to overthinking. She accidentally went into Adam's apartment. The door wasn't locked. And no one was at home. When Rozy was about to leave, Adam came home. He was not alone. He was with a woman. And the woman was crying.

Rozy rushed into one of the rooms to hide. She overheard Adam's conversation with the woman. The woman told Adam that her boyfriend just dumped her after she told him that she is pregnant with his child. Rozy heard Adam calm the woman down.

Everything was ok until Adam pulled out a stake knife. Adam slashed the woman's throat. He even stabbed her more than one time. The woman died on the spot. Rozy was shocked and horrified by what she just saw. Rozy knocked a broomstick and made a noise. Adam heard the noise and entered the room where Rozy was in. Rozy was terribly scared. She tried to jump out of the window and got herself injured.

The next morning, Rozy woke up at a hospital. Her best friend, Hawa was next to her. And Adam was sitting right in front of her. Rozy was terrified when she saw Adam. She screamed out loud and grabbed Hawa. Hawa told Rozy to calm down. Hawa even told Rozy that Adam was the guy who saved her. But Rozy did not believe Hawa.

Rozy tried to report Adam to the police. But they did not believe her. In fact, no one believed Rozy. Adam seems like a very decent guy. Everyone believed that Rozy had a bad dream because she was mentally burnout. Rozy started to believe the same thing as well. So Rozy apologized to Adam.

In episode 7, Rozy saw a post about a missing woman on social media. The missing woman's name was Angeline Chua. And she looks exactly like the woman Rozy saw in Adam Bahri's apartment. Oh dear... it wasn't a dream. It was real! Who was Adam Bahri actually? Was he really a psychopath?

THE FOUR REASONS TO BINGE-READ THE GUY UPSTAIRS

#1 THE INTRIGUING STORYLINE

TGU has a very intriguing storyline. Every episode ends with a question about what happened next. If this webtoon is printed into a book, it will definitely be a page-turner. This webtoon is good for readers who like fast reads.

#2 THE COMPELLING CHARACTERS

Besides the intriguing storyline, this webtoon also has compelling characters in it. All characters in TGU are make-believe. They are all not-so-perfect people. They all have a good side and a dark side. I am very intrigued to find out Adam Bahri's backstory. The first season of this webtoon already ended. And now we are waiting for season 2. In the last episode of season one, Adam murdered a girl he dated. He murdered her because he was so angry at her. To me, Adam doesn't seem like an evil person. He seems like a person with a mental health problem. So I wonder, what is his backstory? Was Adam an abused child? I hope Hanza will reveal it in season 2. Oh... I'm so looking forward to TGU season 2.

#3 THE STUNNING ILLUSTRATIONS

TGU webtoon has stunning illustrations. Hanza is really talented ^_^ I also like the way Hanza draws her character. This webtoon is also drawn in anime style. But the anime style has Malaysian vibes in it. I can imagine how the characters look like if they were real people. I hope this webtoon will be adapted into a drama series soon. And I hope Malaysian hunky actor, Hun Haqeem will be cast as Adam Bahri. Hehehe ^_^

#4 THIS WEBTOON HIGHLIGHTS CURRENT SOCIAL ISSUES

Image: Hanza Art's Twitter @az_hanza

TGU is a very intellectual webtoon. This webtoon highlights social issues that are happening in Malaysia right now such as mental health problems, bullying, child abuse, and even corruption. This webtoon is definitely a good read. I highly recommend you guys to read The Guy Upstairs. I'm sure you will enjoy it. Especially if you're into the thriller genre.

Ok, so these are the four reasons to binge-read The Guy Upstairs by Hanza Art. Overall, I rate this webtoon 10/10. This webtoon is just brilliant and it's a work of art. This webtoon is a must-not-miss, guys.

FYI, The Guy Upstairs recently got nominated for the Best Webcomics category in Ringo Awards this year. The vote is now open for comic professionals. If you're a comic professional and Malaysian, please vote for The Guy Upstairs. Let's support Hanza Art. I believe this webtoon deserves to win an award since it is so awesome.
