NOVEL REVIEW: MIMPI BY RAHIM RAMLI

Eiyo Fadneiras,

I'm back from my vacation. How are you guys doing lately? Did anyone miss me? Hehehe ^_^ I will share my review of Rahim Ramli's Mimpi in this latest post. Now let's begin this review with the author's bio...

ABOUT RAHIM RAMLI

Rahim Ramli dreamed of becoming a cartoonist, wrestler, and rocker before he began his writing career. This Fixi author likes writing for three mediums: book, screenplay, and theater. Besides writing, Rahim Ramli also likes watching theater and doing fitness activities. He's a fan of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He also loves wrestling, tokusatsu, and metalcore music. Mimpi (2023) is Rahim Ramli's second novel under the Fixi publishing house after Pijama (2018).

PS: Sorry, I can't find the author's picture :P

ABOUT MIMPI

Mimpi means dreams. Not all dreams are sweet and make you smile when you wake up. Some are horrifying, make you exhausted, and give you eye bags when you wake up. This is what Raziq and his friends are experiencing.

Raziq and all teenagers in Malaysia are having nightmares. The nightmares make them lack of zzzzzz. Oh dear... this is bad. The nightmares make Raziq a lone ranger. Raziq also misses his friend, Adlina. Adlina has been in a coma for six months. Nobody knows what happened to her. Why and how did she end up in a coma?

One night, Raziq dreams of meeting Adlina in a different world. In the dream, Raziq is attacked by a horrifying-looking creature. And Adlina rescues him. In the dream, Adlina is not an ordinary high school girl. She's a superhero with amazing superpowers. Woah!!!

What happened to Adlina? Is she really a superhero? What world are Raziq and Adlina in right now? Why are all the teenagers in Malaysia having nightmares? And who causes the nightmares? Raziq is about to find out...

MY REVIEW OF MIMPI

Mimpi is more than just a fantasy and sci-fi novel. The author also highlights mental health and loneliness issues among teenagers in Mimpi. And the messages are clearly written.

Raziq is portrayed as a lonely child. His mother is a working single mom. His father passed away when he was a little boy. And Raziq doesn't have siblings. Staying at home alone after school times makes Raziq lonely and bored. But Raziq is a very imaginative kid. He likes art and drawing. Whenever Raziq has an imagination, he will draw them in his sketchbook.

Like Raziq, Adlina is also a lonely child. Her family is quite wealthy. Both of her parents have good careers. But both of them are always too busy working. Therefore, Adlina is always left behind. This makes Adlina lonely. Adlina also likes to draw. Adlina's passion for art makes her able to be friends with Raziq. They love sharing their imagination and passion for art together.

Besides Raziq and Adlina, Irham (the antagonist) is another lonely child. In fact, he is very lonely, sad, and a lost soul teenager. Irham's parents are quite wealthy. But unfortunately, Irham's parents hardly give their attention to him. And this makes Irham feel lost. Irham has one elder sister named Isha. Irham is not at all close to Isha. To Irham, Isha is a bitch. She likes scolding him. And every time Irham quarrels with Isha, their parents will always take Isha's side. This makes Irham feel he is unwanted anywhere he goes. Oh dear, poor kid... Irham is an antagonist I can't hate. He's just an innocent kid who needs love.

Before reading Mimpi, I always believe that it is important for all parents not to neglect their kids. Growing up is never easy for every child. Money is not the only important thing in this world.  In fact, love is the biggest wealth ever. Every child won't be complete without love. Reading Mimpi proves that my beliefs are true.

Besides the moral messages and characters, I also like Rahim Ramli's imagination for Mimpi. The author's imagination makes the book unique compared to all the books I've read this year. Yay! Congrats to Rahim Ramli on a job well done ^_^

Overall, Mimpi is an enjoyable read and I rate it 9/10. Insya-Allah, I will read this novel again in the future. I highly recommend my fellow bookworms to check out Mimpi. Trust me, guys, you won't be disappointed with Rahim Ramli's work. However, I need to be honest that this story has some mild violent bloody scenes. So it is not suitable for those who are under 15.

I've been a fan of Fixi novels since 2013. But I have not been reading Fixi novels for quite a long time, especially since I delve into the historical romance genre. Hehehe ^_^ So reading Mimpi makes me realize how much I miss reading novels published by Fixi. Yeah, Mimpi is definitely a good read. Just sharing some experience, guys ^_^

Okay, so this is my review of Rahim Ramli's Mimpi. Has anyone read Mimpi by Rahim Ramli? If yes, what are your opinions of the story? What are the moral messages you learned from reading this novel? Btw, is there anyone here a fan of Fixi novels too? If yes, what is your favorite novel published by Fixi and why?

Thank you for reading my review. I'll see you guys again in my next post. Insya-Allah.

XoXo,

Fadima Mooneira ^_^

  3. It sounds like those kids in that book have a pretty bad life long before the nightmares started. Neglect like that is considered domestic abuse in my country, and no child should have to experience it

  8. I love your review! This definitely sounds like a very interesting book! You’re right. The antagonist is not someone you can hate. He is someone the readers can actually relate to. There are a lot of lonely people out there and a lot of people who were neglected by their parents. Creating a relatable antagonist is great writing! This book sounds like it would make a really good movie! I wouldn’t be surprised if was turned into one!
