SIX REASONS TO BINGE-WATCH WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU TANGERINES
When Life Gives You Tangerines (WLGYT) is now one of the most-watched K-dramas on Netflix. Written by Lim Sang Choon and directed by Kim Won Seok, it belongs to the slice-of-life genre with a mixture of romance. The drama stars IU, Park Bo Gum, Moon So-ri, Park Hae Joon, Kim Seon Ho, and many more. WLGYT was released on Netflix in March 2025. The drama becomes an international hit. WLGYT receives praises for the plot, storyline, script, the actors' awesome performance, the screenplay, and direction.
WLGYT follows two twin flames, Oh Ae Sun (IU) and Yang Gwan Sik (Park Bo-Gum). Ae Sun and Gwan Sik are not from a wealthy family. Both of them were born and grew up in Jeju Island. Ae Sun is a rebellious girl and a lover of books. She dreams of becoming a poet and is determined to move to Seoul. Her parents called her 'literary girl'. Her dear friend, Gwan Sik, is a humble, quiet, sincere, and diligent young man. Gwan Sik loves Ae Sun with all his heart. He desires her. But he respects and supports her dreams, even though they might not include him. And Gwan Sik has his own dreams of becoming a swimmer as well.
WLGYT is more than just a romantic K-drama. It's emotional and enduring. Besides love, this drama also promotes life, faith, family, and friendship. Watching this drama makes you believe in good things, especially kindness and miracles. This drama touches my heart deeply. In this post, I'm going to share with you six reasons to binge-watch WLGYT. Now let's begin with reason no.1...
#1 THE STORY PROVIDES GOOD MESSAGES
Like I said, watching WLGYT makes you believe in good things. Yes, this drama provides audiences with good messages about life and faith. Firstly, watching this drama makes you believe and learn about true love. True love is more than just romance and fairytales. It's a love that is based on mutual respect, understanding, and support. And the writer portrays these three things in Ae Sun and Gwan Sik's relationship. Plus, Ae Sun and Gwan Sik are also a couple who are always willing and ready to face the storms together.
Secondly, this story is also about kindness. Ae Sun and Gwan Sik are two kind-hearted people. Even though they aren't wealthy, they still love helping those who are in need. And they do not hope for anything in return. Yes, Ae Sun and Gwan Sik are two good and strong people. That's why miracles come to them. Even though Ae Sun and Gwan Sik never ask for anything in return, people whom they helped will always sincerely want to return something to them. Yes, guys... kindness will always return to you if you are sincere. It may not happen immediately. But it will happen later. Allah SWT is always fair.
Thirdly, it is never too late to achieve your dreams. In the early episodes of WLGYT, Ae Sun got expelled from school for her naughty antics. It crushed her hopes and dreams. And at the age of 20, Ae Sun and Gwan Sik gave up on their dreams. Instead of becoming a poet and a swimmer, both of them chose to be together. Yep, they got married. Ae Sun and Gwan Sik never regret the choice they made. They live a long, happy life together, even though there were ups and downs. In her 70s, Ae Sun finally becomes a published poet. Yep, her first poetry book got published. So, here we can see... no matter how old we are, it is never too late to achieve our dreams. Allah SWT is always listening to our prayers. Just because we have not achieved what we want yet, there is no confirmation that it has been canceled. Plus, our dreams have not been delayed as well. Allah SWT only perfected it for us. HE wants us to be ready to embrace our dreams. And again, trust Allah SWT's timing and have faith in whatever you are doing now. Besides true love, kindness, and dreams, this drama also portrays good family and friendship values, self-love, and self-worth.
#2 PARK BO-GUM'S AMAZING ACTING
Park Bo-Gum has been receiving a lot of praises for his acting in Reply 1988 (a 2015 K-drama). Playing the male lead in Reply 1988 gave this South Korean heartthrob international popularity. After Reply 1988, Bo-Gum melts many hearts in Love In The Moonlight (2016), Encounter (2018), and Record Of Youth (2020). And this year, the nation's crown prince continues touching many hearts in When Life Gives You Tangerines as Yang Gwan Sik. Yes, his performance in the drama was amazing. He makes you feel the character deeply. Applause to Bo-Gum on another good job. As a fan, I'm looking forward to his next project. All the best to Bo-Gum ^_^
#3 IU'S SUPERB PERFORMANCE
IU is one of the queens of Hallyu and K-dramas. She is well known for her splendid performance in Dream High (2011), The Producers (2015), Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryo (2016), My Mister (2018), and Hotel Del Luna (2019). IU is a very versatile actress and knows how to channel her characters well. Her performance in WLGYT is awesomely superb. IU plays two characters in WLGYT- the female lead, Oh Ae Sun, and her daughter, Yang Geum Myeong. These characters are channeled in different ways. Ae Sun and Geum Myeong have different personalities. IU plays the two characters so well. It makes you feel both differently and deeply.
Besides her versatile acting, IU is also known as the chemistry queen of K-drama. Yep, she has chemistry with all of her co-stars - from 2PM's Woo Young to Kim Soo Hyun to Lee Joong Ki to Yeo Jin Goo. In WLGYT, IU has three male leads - Park Bo Gum (Yang Gwan Sik), Lee Jun Young (Park Yeong Bum/Geum Myeong's first love), and Kim Seon Ho (Park Chung Seop/Geum Myeong's true love and husband).
#4 KIM SEON HO'S DREAMY COMEBACK
South Korean heartthrob, Kim Seon Ho has melted many hearts in Star-Up (2020) and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (2021). This year, Seon Ho melted many hearts (even more) again as Park Chung Seop in When Life Gives You Tangerines. Yep, he made a special cameo in the drama, guys ^_^ In WLGYT, the character Seon Ho plays is an artist. He is also Yang Geum Myeong's true love. Female audiences (including me >_<) fall in love with Seon Ho again and again after watching this drama. The character he plays is adorable, dreamy, and a cutie. Oh yeah, Seon Ho's chemistry with IU in the drama is amazing and undeniable. Everyone wishes to see them work together again. Yeah!
#5 IT GIVES NICHOLAS SPARKS DÉJÀ VU
If you're a fan of Nicholas Sparks novels like The Notebook, The Wedding, The Last Song, Counting Miracles, The Wish, The Best Of Me, and many more, WLGYT is a drama you must not miss. This drama has the same vibe as all the stories written by Nicholas Sparks. This is how I felt when I was watching the drama with my mother. And yep, Ae Sun and Gwan Sik's relationship totally reminded me of Allie and Noah's relationship in The Notebook. Their relationship is more than romantic. It's very deep and enduring. It's a love that transcends time and distance. It's a love that will remain eternity.
#6 IT'S AN ENDURING TWIN FLAME LOVE STORY
The concept of twin flames is new compared to soulmates. But most people believe it is deeper and more profound. That's why I'm fascinated with this concept. When I watched WLGYT, the word 'twin flames' entered my mind. Yep, I describe this drama as a twin flame love story. That's why it is deep, enduring, profound, gives you epiphany, and makes you see the world differently. Ae Sun and Gwan Sik are each other's twin flames. And so is Geum Myeong and Chung Seop. Their connection and chemistry are very strong. These characters' enduring love for each other makes you believe in true love. That's why this drama touches my heart deeply. I cried towards the end. It is so touching.
